Is It Finally Time to Replace Your Old Air Conditioning System?

As soon as the temperatures start to cool off a bit when we move deeper into the fall, there’ll be an opportunity to replace aging parts of your HVAC system. Start off with a heating maintenance visit from professionals so you’ll know if your heater is going to make it through the winter. But you may also wish to consider making some drastic changes with your air conditioner— such as replacing it. The mild weather in fall is a great time to have this done: you won’t have to think about it through the winter, and as soon as the warm weather comes back again, you’ll have the great AC ready to go.

But how will you know you need a new AC?

That’s the big question. You don’t want to discard an air conditioner that still has some solid performance years left in it—that’s a waste of money. Below are some ways you can tell you have an AC that’s actually ready to retire. You can call our specialists for an expert opinion.

  • It’s more than 15 years old: The average lifespan for an air conditioning system is 10 to 15 years. Any system older than 15 years is more susceptible to breakdowns and plunges in energy efficiency.
  • It costs more to run than it once did: If your air conditioning system has received regular maintenance each year, it should retain 95% of its efficiency for most of its life. When that efficiency drops and your bills start to rise, it means the AC is close to the end.
  • Repairs are mounting: In general, an air conditioning system shouldn’t need more than one repair call a year, if that. If you’re calling more than once a year for repairs, or the system needs upwards of $500 annually in fixes to keep it running, then it’s better to have the AC replaced rather than to continue to sink money into it.
